Folgers is a coffee you can always be proud to serve, and there is a lot you can do to make sure your guests enjoy the full taste and aroma of Folgers at its best. Here are some key considerations.

Start from the grounds up

For individual guests, or small groups, have a variety of coffee blends on hand. Giving your
guests a choice is always appreciated. Have on hand a mild blend (such as Folgers Classic Roast), a darker blend (such as Folgers 100% Colombian) and a decaf. You may even want to add to the choice by having Hazelnut or French Vanilla on hand.

Focus on your strength

Coffee taste and brew strength are a matter of personal preference. So it's a good idea to find out how your guest or guests prefer their coffee. You can then adjust brew strength adding (to strengthen) or subtracting (to weaken) one tablespoon of coffee for every 10 cups.
Generally, for each serving of coffee use 1 ½ Tbsp (25 mL) ground coffee for each 175 mL(6oz) cup of water

Great flavour: The Do's

  • Use cold, fresh water when brewing. Hot water can cause poor flavour. Bottled water should be used if off tastes are present in your tap water.
  • Always allow the coffee maker to complete its brew cycle before pouring a cup to ensure the coffee is as close as possible to the desired strength. The first coffee to pass through the filter is the most concentrated, and the coffee at the end of the brew is the most diluted.
  • Drink your coffee immediately after brewing, because when coffee sits, it gets stale and bitter. (Just be sure it's not so hot that it burns your guests)
  • Coffee should not be left on the burner for more than 15 minutes. After this time, store any leftover brewed coffee in an airtight thermos or carafe.
  • Clean your coffee maker. It's important to rinse both the brew basket and the carafe with warm water immediately after every use to minimize the coffee residues that can cause poor flavour.

    Great flavour: The Don'ts

  • Leftover coffee should not be reheated because it will taste bitter and stale.
  • Never reuse coffee filters because they absorb the leftover stale flavours and they tear, allowing grounds to pass through.
  • Never reuse coffee grounds because the best coffee flavours are extracted the first time they pass through the filter.

    How about instant?

To brew yourself the best possible taste with Instant Coffee Crystals:
  • Use one slightly rounded teaspoon of crystals for each 6-ounce cup of water.
  • Heat water in the microwave or on the stove until boiling.
  • Measure rounded teaspoons into the mug.
  • Pour the water over the crystals.
  • Stir and enjoy! (Be careful, the drink will be very hot.)

As with brewed coffee, you should use fresh water to make instant coffee. Bottled water should be used if off tastes are present in your tap water.

A final word on storing Folgers

To help preserve the flavour and aroma of your Folgers®, we recommend storing your open container of ground coffee in the refrigerator with the lid tightly closed. Even so, it's best to only keep open grounds for up to a month.
Do not store ground coffee or instant in the freezer, as this can reduce your coffee's flavour. For more about keeping Folgers coffee fresh, read about our new AromaSeal container

    So, what is Decaffeination?

Folgers Decaffeination process removes the caffeine from beans while maintaining the rich flavour. The beans are first steamed. This draws the caffeine to the surface. Next, a natural substance called ethyl acetate-commonly found in fruit-is poured over the beans to extract the caffeine. After the caffeine is removed, the beans are steamed again.

A trace amount of ethyl acetate may remain. But don't worry, you'd have to drink 500 cups of coffee to get the same amount as found in one very ripe banana.

Do more with your daily grinds

Gardeners take note! Dilute your leftover coffee, and make your very own homemade plant food. A solution of one part coffee to four parts cool water, poured at your plants' roots once every other week, will serve as a great plant food. The grounds themselves make great compost.
